SIA Door Supervisor Training Explained for First-Time Learners

Starting a career in the UK private security industry can feel confusing if you have never done it before. Many first-time learners are unsure where to start, which course they need, who to pay and how the SIA licensing process works.

This guide explains SIA Door Supervisor training step by step, from choosing a compliant training provider to gaining your qualification and applying for your licence. It is written specifically for first-time learners who want a clear, accurate overview of the process.

This blog is particularly useful for learners looking to complete SIA Door Supervisor training in Birmingham and the surrounding areas.

What is SIA Door Supervisor Training?

SIA Door Supervisor training is a mandatory qualification for anyone who wants to work in licensed door supervision roles in the UK, including venues such as pubs, bars, nightclubs, events and festivals.

The course is typically delivered over 6 days through a blended learning model, combining:

  • Self-study (online learning)
  • Face-to-face classroom training and assessment

Training must be completed with a provider approved by an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, such as Highfield Qualifications.

Once you pass the qualification, you can then apply for a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which is legally required before you can work.

Note that exam dates and times are set by the training centre and you will be informed of these dates in advance to take your test onsite.

Step-by-Step Process in Obtaining Your SIA Licence

Here’s a clear breakdown of how to obtain your SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence in the UK, based on the latest 2026 regulations.

Step 1: Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – Mandatory Requirement

Before you can attend the Door Supervisor course, you must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate. The EFAW course lasts 1 day and must be completed before Door Supervisor training.

Note: Most learners choose to book a bundle package that includes both EFAW and Door Supervisor training, which can be more convenient and cost-effective.

Step 2: Completing the Door Supervisor Qualification

After holding a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate, you are eligible to enrol for the Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors.

The course is divided into four mandatory units, delivered through online learning and classroom-based training and assessment:

Unit 1: Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry

This unit introduces the foundations of professional security work, including: the role and responsibilities of security operatives, legal powers and limitations, arrest procedures and personal safety, emergency procedures (fire safety, evacuation, incident response), communication, reporting and record-keeping, recognising and responding to terrorism threats and safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

Unit 2: Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry

This unit focuses specifically on licensed premises and event environments, covering common crimes and risks faced by door supervisors, drugs and alcohol legislation, licensing law and venue responsibilities, evidence preservation and incident management, queue control and capacity management and use of safety equipment such as radios and body-worn cameras.

Unit 3: Application of Conflict Management in the Private Security Industry

This unit develops practical skills for managing difficult situations, including identifying causes of conflict, dynamic risk assessment, communication and de-escalation techniques and problem-solving in confrontational situations.

Unit 4: Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry

This unit is delivered in a controlled, classroom environment and covers legal and professional considerations of physical intervention, risks associated with restraint, situational awareness and emotional control, approved techniques to protect yourself and others and safe escorting and holding techniques designed to minimise harm.

Step 3: SIA (Security Industry Authority) Licensing

After successful completion of your training and assessment, you must get your SIA licence, but before we start, it’s important to know a few things.

Before you can submit your SIA Door Supervisor licence application, it is crucial that the Awarding Body formally notify the SIA that you have passed your qualification.

Even if you have received your certificate or award, you cannot proceed with the application until the awarding body has updated the SIA system with your results. If this notification hasn’t occurred, your application cannot be processed.

Following, we have the SIA (Security Industry Authority) licensing process, which begins with your verification.

Application Verification

As a first-time applicant, you must be 18 or older to apply for the SIA Door Supervisor Licence and if so, you need to provide the following information based on Group A and B that we will discuss later needed during online application submission:

1. Official documents to prove your identity, such as a passport, driving licence or biometric residence permit.

2. Details of all addresses you’ve lived in the last few years. This helps with identity and criminal record checks. Make sure this information is accurate before applying.

    Criminal Record Check

You will need to have a criminal record check as part of the SIA application. The record check looks at your past and some criminal records may be considered depending on the situation. If you have any past convictions, be ready to explain them if needed.

If you have lived outside the UK for more than 6 continuous months in the last 10 years, you’ll need to provide evidence of overseas criminal record checks.

Right to Work in the UK

If you are not a UK citizen, you must have the right to work in the UK. This will be checked by the SIA through records held by the Home Office. Make sure you have the correct documentation to prove your eligibility.

    Mental Health Question

If you’ve been compulsorily detained or treated under the Mental Health Act in the last 5 years, you will be asked to provide contact details of a psychiatrist or GP. The SIA may ask for a medical report from you before proceeding with your application.

    Step: 04 Online Application Submission

On to the next move, let discuss step-by-step on how to set up your SIA account and what actions you need to perform:

    Create an SIA Account

First, you need to create an online SIA account. Submit the online application form with the required documents, including proof of identity and qualification.

    Application Form Details

The form will require you to consent to the SIA to check your identity and criminal record. Make sure all the information is correct and complete, as wrong or missing details could delay your application.

    Payment of Licence Fee

The licence fee for the SIA Door Supervisor Licence is non-refundable, so make sure you are financially able to pay before submitting your application.

SIA licence fee from March 2026 is £204, as mentioned on official UK government site.

    Required Documents for First-Time Applicants

You will need to show documents from Group A and Group B to prove your identity.

As a first-time applicant, you also need to provide a passport-style photo. You can go to a Post Office or have a UK passport holder to sign it if you’re applying from outside the UK.

    Next Steps After Submission

After submitting your application, you will receive “next steps” instructions from the SIA. This will include information on where to go to verify your documents, provide your photo and possibly pay your fee if you’re applying on your own.

If you’re in the UK, the Post Office will usually be the place where your identity and photo are verified. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully to avoid delays.

If you are applying from outside the UK, you may need to upload additional documents, such as evidence of overseas criminal records.
