Changes to Close Protection Training Coming in April 2024

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has extended the introduction of the updated close protection qualification to 01 April 2022.

SIA are working with a close protection expert working group, awarding organisations and physical intervention programme providers to develop the relevant techniques and associated quality assurance processes for the new qualification.

What changes to expect?

1. Physical intervention skills
2. Queues and crowds
3. Licensing laws
4. Protection of vulnerable people

Changes to the qualification includes new physical intervention skills for close protection operatives. The current Close protection qualification does not include any physical intervention content. So, the Sia are adding a physical intervention skills unit and the current physical intervention from the Door supervisor module to close protection.

The new content will allow the integration arrangement that permits close protection licence holders to work as Door Supervisors to continue.
The new close protection qualification will also include content from the common unit and the door supervision unit.

The new close protection qualification will also include content from the common unit and the door supervision unit.

The SIA have launched a series of webinars for training providers, operatives and the wider industry. These sessions outline the content added to the new qualification and also provide an overview of the new bespoke physical intervention skills for close protection operatives.

Will existing close protection licence holders need top-up training when the new qualification is available?
